CRAIG RECOMMENDS - EASTER SELECTION OF WINES

Selection of wine pictures

Craig recommends an Easter selection of wines
to celebrate and to enjoy with fish in particular

if you visit Northcote this Easter you will find a fantastic new Champagne which is worth a try -

Jacques Selosse creates a fantastic style of Champagne which is rich and complex using the biodynamic method he leaves nothing to chance and does nothing in the vineyards that interferes with the natural balance of the vines. His Champagnes are regarded to have real style with white flowers and a biscuity nose with a resemblance of a great White Burgundy. We feature five of his great cuvees which would be fantastic with all our superb fish selections.

Fish lends itself to clean fresh wines that allow the fish and shellfish to tantalise the taste buds, some of our top recommendations are-

Portugal
This great wine is hugely underrated and really worth choosing,
it is a stunning foil to any great fish dish.
Alvarinho soalheiro, Vinho Verde, Minho – Antonio Esteves Ferreira 2001
£30.60

Loire Valley, France
A fantastic sauvignon from a little known village, this rivals many great Sauvignons
And marries up a treat with white fish.
Quincy, Domaine des Ballandors 2004
£28.95

White Burgundy
Clos de Loyes, Chateau des Jacques Louis Jadot 2001

This white burgundy is a new list entry for Spring at Northcote
Classically this is a white Beaujolais
as the vineyards are in Morgon in the Beaujolais region.

This wine is 100% chardonnay, the grape is fat but subtle at the same time, with a
Mouth filling sensation that is really rewarding with fish.
Clos de Loyse, Chateau des Jacques, Louis Jadot 2001
£32.95

All our wines are available for home from The Wright Wine Company in Skipton who also have an incredible selection of rare and unusual whiskeys. www.wineandwhisky.co.uk

We would also strongly advise a visit to Bryne’s of Clitheroe for fantastic wines and great advice from the Byrne brothers.  If you love wines from Portugal, Tim is your man for some superb wines for a treat.

LANCASHIRE'S OWN RARE BREED BRITISH WHITE CATTLE

Selection of Lancashire Rare Beef pictures

Beef like you’ve never tasted before
only available at The Three Fishes & Northcote Manor

This is food… with Roots!

Nigel, has long had a passion for all things local… not just for the specialities of a region famous for its enviable line-up of traditional dishes, but for our local food heroes… the home-grown band of artisan suppliers who bring us the pick of the crop, the leanest cuts and the catch of the day. So it was only a matter of time before he went in search of a herd of prime beef, born and bred in Lancashire.

And he found it… in every sense of the word and working along side Jim Curwen of Marshaw Farm, Abbeystead Lancaster, Jim is now rearing one of the strongest herds of British White Cattle and more importantly this herd is where it belongs in the heart of Lancashire.

The history of the British Whites is featured on the Northcote Manor web site.

Nigel’s belief that the herd would produce meat of rare and outstanding quality has more than been rewarded. Matured and hung for 5 weeks, the beef has a uniquely mouth-watering flavour… full-bodied, with a creamy aftertaste, providing great cuts of meat from all parts of the animal.

Jim is a kindred spirit, a man who like Nigel, is dedicated to producing food of outstanding quality. Jim purchased the original 20 strong-herd, including a bull – meadowlands classic, which was a major investment, of which Nigel guarantees to purchase all the beef he produces. The deal now struck between these two local food heroes, the herd goes from strength to strength.  The herd is naturally reared on GM free grazing with care and attention and Jim will be taking the herd by this summer to a 50 strong herd of cattle including two new bulls – a 16 month old – Hope Farm Connan and a potential prize winning bull – a 3 year old – Wellingham Clyde, who is the son of Woodbastwick Jack Sharkey, champion of the Royal Show in 1998.
